Top acts for Reggae on the Pier Sunday
As the curtains come to a close on Reggae Month, the celebration moves into high gear with Reggae on the Pier, a virtual concert curated by the culture ministry and VP Records.
Reggae on the Pier, which is filmed at the Port Authority of Jamaica's cruise port at the Historic Naval Dockyard in Port Royal, Kingston, features Derrick Morgan, Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffiths, Richie Spice, Christopher Martin, Romain Virgo, and Tarrus Riley. Streaming a live set from his Waterhouse, St Andrew studios is legendary producer and soundman King Jammy. Musical director is saxophonist extraordinaire Dean Fraser.
State Minister of Culture Alando Terrelonge pointed out that the show represents a fusion of past and present glory.
"Port Royal is a historic city. It was once one of the most famous cities in the world and it is an integral part of Jamaica's history and where we are as people. We are fusing that in terms of the historical site with the present glory of reggae music," Terrelonge said.
TRIBUTE
Terrelonge paid tribute to VP Records for partnering with the ministry on this venture and Michelle Williams, regional director, Caribbean and Latin America for VP Records, gave more insight into the partnership.
"We have a long-standing relationship with [Culture] Minister [Olivia] Grange. Last year, we did the Beres Hammond concert to bring the curtains down on Reggae Month and we did it in partnership with the ministry. And we decided that this year we would again sponsor the Reggae Month final show. So, we all just came together and started working," Williams said.
Reggae on the Pier will be streamed on Sunday on the VP Records YouTube channel and Reggae Month TV, which is streamed on various online platforms. Reggae Month 2022 is being held under the theme 'Come Ketch De Riddim'.
