Food For The Poor Band Camp member makes mark in gospel competition
Long before the applause and the bright lights, there was a young girl with a love for music, a clarinet in her hands and a willingness to learn.
Today, Daina Craig is making her mark as a young gospel talent, having secured third place in the Jamaica Gospel Star competition, run by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission. Her third-place finish is an achievement that she said is part of a musical journey shaped, in part, by her years at the Food For The Poor Band Camp. Craig has been a member of the Band Camp family since 2023. When she first joined, her instrument of choice was the clarinet. Two years later, she added another instrument to her musical toolkit, taking up the trombone.
But Craig’s story is not simply about learning to play an instrument. It is about discovering that being a musician means much more than having a good voice. That distinction has become an important part of Craig’s development. While her vocal ability has helped her command attention as a performer, Band Camp has helped her understand the discipline, teamwork and commitment that happen behind the scenes before the music ever reaches an audience.
Craig credits the programme with giving her exposure to new experiences, while teaching her lessons she can carry into every performance. For her, talent is only the beginning. The real transformation happens when determination meets consistent effort. From clarinet to trombone, from classroom exercises to the competition stage, Craig’s journey shows how a young person’s musical potential can evolve when given the right environment to flourish.
The Band Camp experience has helped Craig become not only a stronger performer, but also a more disciplined and collaborative musician, qualities that are now evident as she steps into an increasingly visible place in the gospel music space. With her voice, her instruments and the lessons she has gathered along the way, Craig is showing that when young talent is given room to grow, the next great sound can come from anywhere, even from a Band Camp rehearsal room.
