Several roads in the Kingston and St Andrew area were blocked with traffic as residents rush home following a major earthquake that rocked several sections of Jamaica.

The quake, which is said to have been centred in Buff Bay in Portland, came in at a magnitude 5.6 on the Richter Scale.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has since called for calm in the public space.

"Our assessments so far has indicated minor damages, but this point I want to tell all Jamaicans to remain calm and follow all the protocols regarding earthquakes and safety," he said.

Holness also said there have been no reported deaths.

Checks are currently underway island wide to fully assess damages.

More details soon.
