Man trying to defend his spouse with broomstick ends up with assault charge

He allegedly stepped in to defend his wife during a heated money dispute, but 55-year-old Cedrick Wilkins ended up on the wrong side of the law after he allegedly grabbed a broomstick and struck the man in the face, leaving him with three broken teeth.

Wilkins, a welder of Bounty Hall, Trelawny, has been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm following the incident in his community on March 18.

According to the Wakefield Police, about 2 p.m., a man went to a shop in the community and confronted the owner about money she allegedly owed him.

Wilkins, who is reportedly the woman’s spouse, allegedly overheard the conversation and came from another section of the shop armed with a broomstick.

Police allege that he used the broomstick to hit the man in the face, resulting in three of the man's teeth being broken.

The injured man was subsequently assisted to hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

After being released on March 20, the man went to the police and made a report about the alleged attack.

Wilkins was arrested and charged on September 2 after police obtained a statement which implicated him in the incident.

His court date is being finalised.
