Higgler tells man to freeze, gets shot in the knee

A simple command to “Freeze!” allegedly turned into gunfire along Howard Cooke Boulevard in Montego Bay, St James, leaving a higgler with a gunshot wound to his knee and facing two charges.

Charged is 44-year-old Wayne Petgrave, of Charles Gordon Market, St James.

According to police, Petgrave allegedly shouted “Freeze!” at a man walking along the roadway about 8:18 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, before approaching him, brandishing a firearm and pointing it at him.

The man reportedly responded by pulling his licensed firearm and firing in Petgrave's direction in an attempt to fend him off.

Petgrave allegedly escaped, but turned up at hospital about five hours later suffering from a gunshot wound to his left knee.

He was treated, placed under police guard and subsequently taken into custody.

Petgrave was charged on September 9 with Assault at Common Law and Possession of a Firearm with Intent to Injure.

He was positively identified by the complainant during a video identification parade.

His court date is being finalised.
