... third incident in four years

Tuesday's fire at the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) has caused several interested voices to call attention to what appears to be a developing pattern at the institution.

In November 2011, the offices of INSPORTS were broken into and several files stolen.

That break-in happened in the same month that Auditor General Pamela Munroe-Ellis tabled in Parliament a report of an audit conducted by her department outlining several financial anomalies that had taken place at the institution.

Tuesday's fire was the second such fire at INSPORTS in the last two years.

The previous fire, which was attributed to faulty wiring, caused damage to the office of the administrative director, Ian Andrews, as well as the executive secretary's office.

Investigators from the fire department and the Special Crime Unit returned to INSPORTS' offices yesterday as they continued investigations into the fire that caused damage to two offices in its Accounts Department.

Minister of Sport Olivia Grange, in a release dated on Tuesday, said that the offices would remain closed pending investigation into the fire, which caused a reported $1.5 million in damage to "some records, furniture, and equipment".

The fire reportedly started in the air conditioning unit. Andrews, in a release said it was due to "faulty wiring", a claim that general manager of the facility Major Desmon Brown has rejected.

As far as I know, there is no faulty wiring over there," Brown said.
