Ramgeet wins US$60 000 Wally’s Choice Stakes
Experienced Jamaican jockey Andrew Ramgeet turned in a stellar performance as the carried three-to-one chance Speed Is Life to a narrow victory in the US$60,000 Wally's Choice Minnesota Classic Championship Stakes here on Sunday.
Riding on the 23rd Minnesota Festival of Champions programme worth US$603,000, Ramgeet combined with the five-year-old gelding to edge the three-year-old and upward colts and geldings, going a mile and 16th in race nine.
He also came close in the $60,000 Glitter Star Minnesota Distaff Classic Championship Stakes in race eight, when he finished second with 7-1 chance Blues Edge.
The victory would have been a huge boost for Ramgeet, especially after a near two-month layoff following a fall at Turf Paradise in Phoenix earlier this year.
He broke the gelding nicely and settled him off the pace as 16-1 long-shot Pennant Fever led through the quarter in 24.05 seconds, before favourite AP is Loose took over the running with Speed of Life tracking.
A stretch battle developed between Speed of Life and AP is Loose with Ramgeet narrowly outlasting his rival at the wire.
