MANCHESTER (AP):

Manchester United ended a run of three straight losses by beating third-tier Northampton 3-1 in the third round of the English League Cup yesterday.

Second-half goals by Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford spared United further embarrassment after the first blip of Jose Mourinho's tenure at Old Trafford, following successive losses to Manchester City, Feyenoord and Watford.

Manchester City also advanced with a 2-1 victory at Swansea to make it nine straight wins to open the season under Pep Guardiola.

There were also wins for Premier League teams West Ham, Sunderland and Southampton, who enter the draw for the last 16 later Wednesday.
