Portmore turn back Cavalier in Caribbean Cup

Reigning Jamaica Premier League (JPL) champions Portmore United picked up their first win of the 2026 Concacaf Caribbean Cup as they turned back Cavalier 2-0 at the National Stadium last night in Group B action.
Jevaughn Grant opened the scoring for Portmore in the 14th minute, before Javier Brown doubled the lead and secured all three points with a strike in the 88th.
The win means Portmore picked up their first points of the competition and moved to third in the group standings on three.
Cavalier, the 2024 Caribbean Cup champions, are still without a win as they sit fourth on two point.
Portmore’s head coach Rodolph Austin was pleased with his team’s performance, saying they were strong in all areas of the field.
“I think we played well. I think we created a lot of chances. We also defended well.”
Portmore opened the scoring in the early exchanges as Grant pulled off a diving header from close range to head home a delivery into the box off the boot of Rashaun Small.
Nicholas Hamilton almost pulled Cavalier level three minutes later when a defensive error left Portmore exposed at the back.
However, his lofted effort, which was destined for goal, was cleared off the line in a last-ditch clearance.
Portmore looked destined to double their lead in the 22nd minute when Corey Burke was sent through on goal, but Cavalier were able to recover in time and close down the space.
Burke again came close to scoring, this time with a glancing header that drifted agonisingly wide of the far post.
The second half of the match started with impunity, and Grant came close to a brace when he was found free in the box. But he could not replicate his feat in the first half as this time his header flashed wide of the target.
Portmore would eventually find their second through a combination of individual brilliance and good positioning.
Tarick Ximines was a man let loose as he turned one defender before dancing around another on his way to goal.
But his brilliant run did not produce a goal as his shot was parried by goalkeeper Tawayne Lynch, but only as far as Brown, who blasted home.
Despite their chances, Cavalier could not mount a comeback and fell to their first defeat of the competition.
Portmore will turn their attention to Mount Pleasant, who they will face on September 9, while Cavalier will close out their Group B campaign against Mount Pleasant on September 17.
