Racing United edge Arnett in five-goal thriller

Racing United opened their Jamaica Premier League (JPL) campaign in winning fashion, edging Arnett Gardens 3-2 at Stadium East yesterday in the second game of a football double-header.
A brace from Tajay Grant (15th minute, 64th) along with a goal from Nickyle Ellis (31st) secured all three points for Racing.
Jamone Shepherd (22nd) and Rushike Nelson’s (81st) strikes were not enough on the day for the Junglists.
Racing had a strong start to the contest and threatened to score in the opening exchanges when Grant floated into the middle, but his shot from just outside the box rolled wide of the mark.
His efforts were rewarded in the 15th minute when he stepped up to convert from the penalty spot and hand Racing the lead.
Their lead did not last long as Arnett roared back to life as Shepherd equalised with a cushioned volley from a corner delivery six minutes later.
Racing would not be denied for long as a brilliant team effort was capped off by Ellis, who struck at the half-hour mark from close range.
Giovanni Taylor felt he had pulled Arnett level when he fired a rocket at goal from distance, but his shot crashed off the bar and was cleared by the Racing defence.
Grant had a brilliant chance to score a third goal for Racing in the 54th minute when he was found free in the box, but he opted for the difficult shot with the outside of his boot and the ball spun wide of the far post.
Grant eventually got his second goal of the game when he was found free in the box, but this time his shot went into the goal between the legs of goalkeeper Anthony Bennett.
Nelson pulled one back for Arnett after beating the goalkeeper at this near post, reducing the goal deficit to one.
Despite several chances, Arnett could not find the equalising goal, with Racing taking all three points after the full-time whistle.
