Portmore United are one step closer to the Concacaf Caribbean Cup final after coming from behind to defeat Haitian side Violette AC 3-1 in the first leg of their semi-final tie at Sabina Park yesterday.

A second-half brace from Javier Brown and a stoppage-time strike from substitute Tedj Bryan turned the game on its head after Jean-Fabrice Vedrine had given Violette the lead in the 38th minute.

The victory handed Violette their first defeat of the season and gave Portmore a two-goal cushion heading into the return leg on October 20 at the Estadio Cibao in the Dominican Republic.

Brown, who was named Man of the Match, said the result was a significant boost to Portmore’s hopes of lifting the title.

“It was great. We really needed this win, so it was really satisfying to come away with it on our home ground,” he said.

“This result means a massive boost for us going into the second leg. We just need to keep focused, concentrate and just keep going.”

Portmore started brightly and controlled much of the opening exchanges, with Tarick Ximines coming close to breaking the deadlock after weaving past three defenders before shooting wide from just outside the box.

Violette gradually settled into the contest and threatened in the 20th minute when Elyvens Dejean drove towards goal, but his ball across the penalty area failed to find a teammate.

The hosts continued to press and should have taken the lead when a defensive error sent Joshua Grant through on goal.

However, he failed to capitalise with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Portmore were made to pay for their missed opportunities when Vedrine curled a superb effort into the top-right corner in the 38th minute to give Violette the advantage at the break.

Violette came close to doubling their lead immediately after the restart, with Dejean hitting the post a minute into the second half.

Violette thought they had scored a second through Clavens Exantus, however, the goal was ruled out for offside.

Portmore continued to search for an equaliser and Brown eventually brought the hosts level, turning the ball into an empty net after goalkeeper Gooly Elien failed to gather the initial effort.

The forward then completed the turnaround in the 75th minute, meeting Clayton Peck’s cross with a first-time volley into the far corner to put Portmore ahead.

Violette were left to rue another missed opportunity when Miche-Naider Chéry also had a goal disallowed for offside in the 80th minute.

Bryan nearly extended Portmore’s lead shortly afterwards, but his close-range effort crashed against the crossbar.

As Violette searched for an equaliser, they were left them exposed at the back and Portmore took full advantage in stoppage time.

Bryan broke through on goal, rounded the advancing goalkeeper and calmly slotted into the empty net in the fifth minute of added time to give the hosts a commanding advantage ahead of the return leg.
