Go and read your bible, pastor

June 23, 2017

Dear Pastor,

In your column published between June 8 to 14, 2017, you answered the man who wrote to you about his dead wife who keeps haunting his present women. I think that you are the one who should go and read the Bible over again, and understand what it says.

You are 100 per cent wrong in saying that the dead knows nothing, and that they no longer have a reward here. As a religious leader, I think you should know better than what you've said. I am 75 years old, and I will tell you that from I was a boy in Jamaica, and as an adult living in Canada, I've had confrontation with ghosts (duppies) on several occasions. Also, my brothers, as kids at different times, have had the same experiences as I did.

Dear S.W.,

First of all, I thank you for reading my column and for expressing your disgust at the comments I made in response to the man who said that his former wife, who is now dead, is constantly haunting the women with whom he is presently having affairs. You say that I should know better and should be ashamed of myself because I express doubt at what the man said.

You believe that the dead have power. You see, sir, you can believe anything you want to believe. But that does not make it right. Evidently, you are not aware that I took my answer directly from the Bible. When I wrote that the dead has no power, I was quoting the Bible. You should read it for yourself. You will find it in the Book of Ecclesiastes 9:5: "For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten". (KJV)

You may also wish to take some time to read what the Bible says about the dead from the following passages of scripture in different translations:

New International Version:

"They are now dead, they live no more; their spirits do not rise. You punished them and brought them to ruin; you wiped out all memory of them."

New Living Translation:

"Those we served before are dead and gone. Their departed spirits will never return! You attacked them and destroyed them, and they are long forgotten."

English Standard Version:

"They are dead, they will not live; they are shades, they will not arise; to that end you have visited them with destruction and wiped out all remembrance of them."

New American Standard Bible:

"The dead will not live, the departed spirits will not rise; therefore you have punished and destroyed them, and you have wiped out all remembrance of them."

King James Bible:

"They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish."

Sir, evidently you are tormented by your inner spirit because your soul is not at rest with God. And the women with whom you are having relationships are not at peace with God, either. I do not care what your brother says and what you say. You may believe what you want to believe, but I believe in a powerful God, and the Bible is my guide. I wish you would join me in reading the Bible and believing the Bible.
