Porn prevents me from having sex

Dear Pastor,

Greetings in the mighty name of Jesus. I read your column all the time and find it interesting, so I would like your advice. I am 18 years old, and I have given my life to God. Pastor, I must say that I have been to hell and back as it relates to my faith. But I know that God is to be praised. I can say that I backslided when I was 15, but I was still in the Church.

The problem I am having is not one that I am proud of. I just can't take my mind off sex. It's like I have to watch porn and masturbate to keep myself from having sex with a guy. I have been molested at a tender age and that resulted in me not being a virgin.

My best friend is a boy, but we live far apart. He wants me to visit him, but I don't trust myself that I won't have sex if I go to his house, because he is the type of guy any girl would want. I have been feeling sexually aroused for quite a long while now.

I really want to get over this problem, but I need help. I love the Lord and would love to serve him better. Please, I await your fatherly advice. God bless you.

A.T.

Dear A.T.,

I know you must be very concerned. You have no doubt in your mind that you are a Christian, but the biggest struggle that you are having is with the flesh. Christians have three major fights. Paul told the young man Timothy that he has to fight the world, the flesh and the devil. The enticement of the world is very strong. The temptation of the flesh is also very strong, and that is why Paul said in the Book of Romans 12:1-2 says, "Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be [c]transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you]."

This fight against the flesh is a daily fight, so Christians have to fast and pray and keep their bodies under subjection. It is not easy, and God knows it is not easy. And sometimes Christians fail to do what is right, because the devil's duty is to destroy the Christian.

When you are tempted to look at porn, look at Christian movies instead until you fall asleep. Develop a habit of reading the Bible before you go to bed, and ask other Christians to pray for you, but you do not have to tell them your problem.
