Boyfriend wants a child before we get married
Dear Pastor,
I have a boyfriend. We have been together for a year and a half. He is a hard worker.
I love him more than words can tell. He is five years my senior. He is the second man I have had. He is a responsible man. He likes to show me off. He loves sports, so he takes me to all the games that he attends. When his friends see him with me, they do not believe that I am his girlfriend because I look so young. Every new place that we are going, he wants me to wear a new outfit. He likes me to wear shorts, but not to expose a whole lot.
I have a younger sister to whom I pass on my clothes. I am in a good job. I don’t have to ask this man for anything, but he offers me money. Since I have been with him, my account has grown. I did not want to live with him, but he told me that he does not like to spend time with me and then have to take me home. So, one Friday, he simply said “This is the last Friday we will be together and you have to go home; pack your things and I will pick you up.”
I was living with my grandmother and I told her what my boyfriend said. She said the only advice she could give me was, if I love this man and I trust him, make sure he does not get me pregnant before I am ready. This man has two children with two different women. He supports his children. They call me aunty. We live in a nice apartment. I asked him how he got the money to buy such an apartment and he told me that he did not do anything illegal, so I didn’t have to fret. I know his children’s mothers. Whenever the children are with us, they call and I talk to them.
My first boyfriend couldn’t walk in this man’s shoes. This man wants me to get pregnant before he marries me. Do you think that is a good idea?
E.
Dear E.,
You mentioned what this man told you he did to earn enough money to purchase the apartment in which both of you live.
However, I will not mention what he told you. However, he is now encouraging you to allow him to impregnate you after which he would marry you. You cannot be sure that he would keep his word if you become pregnant. This man seems to love you and you love him too. You have never had life so good, but please bear in mind that he might change if both of you were to get married or if you were to become pregnant by him.
I am glad that you have a job. Every woman should endeavour to be financially independent. Regardless of what a man is able to give to a woman, she should always try to have her own money and bank account. That may sound stupid to some women, but that is what I have encouraged women to do since I have been a counsellor and I know for sure that I am not wrong.
Pastor
