Jack Scorpio seeks young talent
Veteran sound system operator Jack Scorpio wants to revamp his esteemed Black Scorpio brand with millennials. For the new year, he is extending invitations to young selectors, audio engineers and artistes to join his sound system and record label.
"I am personally investing back in my sound system, which is being remodelled, and my studio, which I'm rebuilding," he told THE STAR. "I am looking for a good, vibrant selector who can talk on a mic and can select. He must come with positiveness, but can be a clash selector, because people love clash and that is a part of Jack Scorpio's history. He has to be computer literate too and know how to use Serato."
The music pioneer said that he wants to incorporate the younger generation to continue his legacy.
"Black Scorpio is a household name internationally, and I don't want if I die today, it dies tomorrow or it dies with me. I need it to continue," he said. "I want to create the next young engineer, artiste and selector for the sound, or even more than one to keep the business alive. You have to work with the times and work with the young generation because they know about the technology and computers."
Scorpio established his label in the 1980s and has produced songs like Where Did All the Loving Go by Dennis Brown, Praises by Beenie Man, and See Dem Coming by Gentleman. He stopped producing music in recent times because of the violent lyrics pervading the dancehall, but said he is ready to get back to producing on one main condition the music must be clean.
"I have that likkle knack to create hit songs and make artistes. As long as you have good melody, clean lyrics and a good attitude, I will work with you," he said. "I am looking to develop up-and-coming artistes with talent and consciousness. You can come with gimmicks, I don't have a problem with that, it's just the type of lyrics you have."
Currently based at 144B Molynes Road, Kingston 19, the producer is revisiting archived material which he hopes to release soon.
"I have some long-time rhythm I want to redevelop and get some of these artistes on top to come and voice some songs, and also help develop some young artistes. So, even people like Chronixx and Protoje, yes, them make a name already, but dem can still come and assist young artiste too," Scorpio said.
