$400,000 bail for men found with 200 ammunitions

A box packed with 200 rounds of ammunition allegedly found inside a Toyota Voxy has landed two St James men before the courts — but both have now secured $400,000 bail.

Jermaine Graham, 32, a deliveryman of Roehampton district in Anchovy, and 23-year-old teller Shamoy Staple of Paradise, Norwood, were each granted bail when they appeared in the St James Parish Court today.

The pair is facing a raft of gun-related charges, including unauthorised possession of ammunition, stockpiling of prohibited weapons, possession of a prohibited weapon, dealing in prohibited weapons and trafficking in prohibited weapons.

Their attorney, Michael Hemmings, successfully applied for bail, which was granted with between one and three sureties.

But freedom came with strings attached.

Graham and Staple must report to the police three times per week — Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays — observe a daily curfew and surrender their travel documents. Stop orders have also been placed on both men at all ports.

The case stems from an August 6 police operation along Fairfield Road in St James.

Police say members of the National Strategic Anti-Gang Division intercepted a white Toyota Voxy about 2:50 p.m. after receiving information that persons aboard were carrying ammunition allegedly intended for sale.

A search of the vehicle allegedly turned up a box containing 200 rounds of 9mm ammunition on the floor on the driver's side.

Both men were taken into custody and later charged following question-and-answer sessions conducted in the presence of their attorneys.

The matter is now headed to the Western Regional Gun Court, where it is scheduled to be mentioned on November 12.
