Man dead, three cops injured in Mt Salem shootout

One man was shot and killed and three police personnel injured during an alleged gunfight in Mt Salem, St James, early this morning.

According to reports, confirmed by a police source, the incident happened about 3:18 a.m. when a police unit assigned to the Area One AFAT unit was on patrol along Crawford Street in Mt Salem.

The cops reportedly came under heavy gunfire, triggering an exchange of gunfire.

During the confrontation, an unidentified man and the three police personnel were shot and injured.

They were all taken to Cornwall Regional Hospital, where the unidentified man was pronounced dead.

The three police personnel remain at the hospital, where they are being treated.

An illegal firearm was also seized by the police.

Mt Salem has been under a Zone of Special Operations (ZOSO) since September 1, 2017, as part of efforts to blunt rampant criminality.
