Two men killed after cops allege man pointed gun at them

Two men were shot dead in a pre-dawn police operation in Watson Grove, Portmore, St Catherine, yesterday, after police said one of the men pointed a gun at them and the other later picked up the same firearm.

The deceased have been identified as 26-year-old Javaughn Newell of Tarus Drive, Watson Grove, and a man known only by the alias ‘Brandon’, of Gulf, Gregory Park, Portmore, St Catherine.

Reports are that about 5:20 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, an intelligence-driven operation was conducted along Tarus Road, Watson Grove, Gregory Park.

Upon entering a premises, the police team approached a one-room concrete dwelling and reportedly observed that one of its doors was ajar.

Two men were seen on a bed.

The team reportedly shouted, “Police,” after which the men moved towards a corner. One of the men then allegedly picked up a firearm and pointed it at the police.

The police took defensive action and fired in the man's direction, injuring him.

The second man then reportedly picked up the same firearm and was also shot and injured by the police.

The firearm was retrieved and identified as a Smith & Wesson pistol fitted with a magazine containing six rounds of .40-calibre ammunition.

Both injured men were assisted to Spanish Town General Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the matter.
