‘I treated him like mi son’ Mom’s heartbreak after cop kills daughter he claimed to love
Killer cop Patrick Walters called her daughter his girlfriend. She treated him like family. Now, he is heading to prison for killing the young woman he once claimed to love.
“Patrick came to our home and we showed him nothing but love,” said Euon Douglas Graham, as she attempted to make sense of a painful reality that she still struggles to accept.
Walters, 24, was on Friday sentenced to 22 years and six months in prison for the killing of her 20-year-old daughter, D’Jonnay Graham. He was also sentenced to 20 years and three months for using a firearm to commit a felony. The sentences are to run concurrently.
Walters had initially been charged with murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the St Mary Circuit Court.
He was charged in connection with the June 25, 2025 shooting death of the assistant teacher at her home in Richmond, St Mary. According to the distraught mother, the couple had a dispute which was over a phone call her daughter had received.
Following the sentencing in the Home Circuit Court in Kingston, the grieving mother spoke of the deep sense of betrayal that continues to torment her family.
“I treated him like mi son. He and my daughter were very loving, but jealousy must have raged upon him. Mi don’t know why him do summen like that.”
According to the facts before the court, Walters was at Graham’s home about 9:15 p.m. on the day, when a dispute developed between himself and D’Jonnay, during which she was shot.
Walters had reportedly shot himself in the head during the incident and was taken to the Port Maria Hospital along with D’Jonnay. However, D’Jonnay succumbed to her injuries.
Graham said no prison term can compensate for the life that was stolen.
“It hurt so bad and he destroyed the entire family because Moya was so loving and caring,” she said. “If they had even given him life it would not bring back my daughter, who I cherish.”
The devastated mother said she had hoped for a harsher sentence, arguing that her daughter’s death has left a void that can never be filled.
“I was looking for life imprisonment because my daughter is at home in the grave and he still has life.”
While Walters reportedly expressed remorse for the killing, Graham said she has found little comfort in his apology.
“I don’t think he was remorseful because, why would he tell a lie in the first place?” she said.
And, despite describing herself as a God-fearing Christian, she admitted she is not yet ready to forgive the man she once considered family.
“Even though I am a Christian, I will never ever forgive him until God let that in my heart,” she said.
“I am hurting from the inside and out but God will work on that. Mi not going to come here and say mi forgive him. It is just one year and I will not forgive him until God release mi.”
