Newnham in 10th at World University Games golf tournament

Jamaica's Jonathan Newnham was in 10th position after the first day of the 16 World University Games golf tournament at Brive-la-Gaillarde, France.

Newnham shot four over par, 76 to tie in 10th position with three other competitors.

Jamaica's other competition at the event, William Knibbs, was seven shots behind in 29th position. A total of 42 male golfers and 34 females are playing in the tournament.

Dr. Mark Newnham, who is accompanying the golfers, noted that the Brive-Planchetorte course is challenging and that trouble lies in wait in the rough for the golfer whose ball leaves the fairway.

Knibbs and Newnham are in a positive frame of mind and realise that the next two days will test their skill and tenacity.
