Miller: Roper Cup win a Manning Cup springboard for KC

Kingston College (KC) head coach Jermaine Miller believes the Roper Cup is more than just a traditional schoolboy football rivalry.
For him, it is an important platform to assess his squad and fine-tune plans ahead of the Manning Cup season.
Miller, who is tasked with leading the schoolboy football giants, got his first major test at the helm of KC against St George’s College over the weekend, and watched his team run out convincing 4-0 winners.
Despite being pleased with the win and his team’s performance, Miller was quick to point out that the scoreline did not tell the full story of the contest. He believes his players had a lot more to offer, but was happy to come away with an important win.
“The scoreline is not a true reflection of how the game really played out, but it was a decent performance from the Kingston College boys,” Miller said.
“I thought they came out, put down the ball, controlled the tempo of the game, and scored some good goals,” he continued.
In his first year as head coach at KC, Miller said the objective is to ensure all his players are playing at their best at the right points in the season.
As one of the seeded teams, KC will begin their campaign in the second round, where they are drawn in Group Three alongside St George’s, St Andrew Technical High School and Tivoli Gardens.
With a few weeks remaining before the second round, Miller said the priority is to ensure his players remain healthy while they close out their remaining practice matches.
“We just have to play some more games. We have another three games to play, so the idea is to come out, keep training, rotate the squad in these games to keep everybody fresh and to ensure that we get into the start of the competition injury-free.”
Miller, who replaced Vassell Reynolds at KC, will be hoping to reclaim the Manning Cup title, which they last won in 2024.
Despite the grand task, Miller believes he is ready to step up to the plate and bring success back to KC.
