Local rivals clash in Caribbean Cup

Former regional champions Cavalier and Jamaica Premier League (JPL) winners Portmore United will both in hunt of their first win in the 2026 Concacaf Caribbean Cup, when they meet in a Group B game at the National Stadium, this evening at 7.
After two matches Cavalier hold two points, following two drawn results, while Portmore are still without a point after their lone game in the competition ended 2-1 in favour of Salcedo of the Dominican Republic.
After two games, the Dominican Republican teams, Cibao and Salcedo lead the group with four points each.
Portmore and Cavalier last met in the final of the JPL back in May, where Portmore won on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
Portmore’s coach Rodolph Austin, who was absent from the team’s first Caribbean Cup match, due to his commitment with the national under 20s, believes his team is now in much better shape to get a result.
“I think we look much sharper. We are more confident and we are just looking towards this game. We are well prepared for the game,” he said.
Austin’s counterpart Rudolph Speid said failure to win by either team would severely dent their long-term ambitions.
“It is essential for both teams to get a win or that could really set us back big time, behind where we want to go,” Speid said.
“But you know how it goes when both teams want a win. The team is more cautious and play better to instructions but it is two evenly matched teams,” he commented.
He pointed that out although he has lost his two main goalscorers from last season, Daryl Masicot and Kimarley Scott, his players are motivated by their JPL final loss to the St Catherine club.
“It is a repeat of the premier league final but probably this is more important. This one is more of a league game where points are important for both sides,” Speid said.
