Russell to step down as CPL’s CEO

ST JOHN’S, Antigua:

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Pete Russell, is set to leave his position following the conclusion of the tournament’s 14th season.

The annual competition climaxed on Sunday with the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons defeating the Jamaica Kingsmen by eight wickets in an entertaining final at Kensington Oval.

A statement issued by the CPL on Thursday said Russell had decided to step back from his current full-time role as CEO.

However, Russell will remain in place until a new CEO is appointed and will continue to support the CPL’s Board and leadership team.

CPL evolution

Under Russell’s guidance, the CPL evolved from an ambitious start-up concept in 2013 into one of the most successful, highly regarded T20 cricket tournaments and a world-class sporting and entertainment product.

In the last year, it expanded to seven franchise teams, launched its own production company (Live and Louder Productions), its own linear TV channel (Rush Live & Louder), a streaming app and an events business.

Speaking on his decision to step back, Russell said he was satisfied with the development of the CPL.

“I am incredibly proud of CPL’s growth and international standing,” said Russell. “I believe its greatest achievement is in bringing fans back to cricket across the Caribbean and providing a platform for generations of young West Indian players to showcase their talent, express themselves on a global stage and pursue their cricketing dreams.

“CPL reignited a passion for the game, fills stadiums with energy and excitement, and creates unforgettable memories for many people throughout the region and around the world,” Russell said.

“I want to thank the fans, the players, franchise owners, sponsors, broadcast partners, regional governments and the dedicated CPL team. It has been the privilege of a lifetime to be part of this journey.”

‘Sincere thanks’

Commenting on Russell’s contribution to the CPL over the past 14 years, Chairman Richard Bevan said: “On behalf of the Board and everyone across CPL, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Pete for his leadership, commitment, and contribution during his tenure as CEO.”

Denis O’Brien, owner and founding investor of CPL, also had high praise for Russell.

“Pete has been a fantastic leader of CPL and has overseen its expansion into new areas, including media and events, over recent years.

“While we are naturally sad to see him step away from his current role as CEO, we are delighted that the business is poised for future growth and Pete will remain involved as part of the wider group,” O’Brien said.
