Peck’s last-gasp goal earns Portmore draw at Arnett
Clayton Peck’s goal in the 10th minute of added time earned Portmore United a 1-1 draw against Arnett Gardens in Monday night’s late game of the Jamaica Premier League football competition at Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
Diamond Clarke put the home team in front after 16 minutes, but Peck snatched a point out of the hands of the hosts when he stabbed home at the back post.
Romeo Guthrie then had a great chance to win it a minute later, but blasted over the bar from inside the box.
Portmore’s coach Rodolph Austin said his team continues to show great resilience in adversity, and was pleased with the point, even though they had a great chance to get all three.
“The way the game went, we are okay with the point. We could have knicked it at the end, but (there was) a bad touch from the player (Guthrie).
“Credit to Arnett. They played a good game at home, with a lot of energy. We played some good football, but our decision-making in the final third wasn’t the best,” he commented.
The first real chance in the game came from Ronaldo Robinson, whose shot was tipped over by Jaedine White.
Rashaun Small then missed a chance at the doorstep for Portmore, while Giovanni Taylor placed over for Arnett moments after.
Arnett would take the lead after finding their rhythm, when Clarke found acres of space in the box to place his shot into the goal from five yards.
After the break, both teams continued to create chances. However, Portmore threw everything forward in the last minute, and referee Ricardo Nation added 12 minutes of added time for White’s injury in the second half.
Javier Brown, Akeem Mullings, Peck and Peter McGregor then all wasted good opportunities for Portmore.
Stoppage time
However, deep into stoppage time, Peck would arrive unmarked at the back post to stab home the equaliser for the champions.
Arnett’s coach Marcel Gayle thought the time added was a bit excessive.
“It was overly excessive, but the referee is always right and in control,” he mused.
“We did most of what we wanted to do today, but what I have been talking about all season, the concentration over the 90 is not there yet. So it is a work in progress.”
Both teams are tied on four points, with Portmore in seventh and Arnett eighth.
In the first game, Waterhouse trashed Chapelton 6-0. Siegel Knight, Rohan Brown, Colorado Murray, Mario Simms, Carvel Benbow and Shamari Dallas were the scorers for Waterhouse, who led 3-0 at halftime.
Waterhouse move into second in nine points, but only ahead of Racing in goal difference. Chapelton are 10th with four points.
