Taboo bringing Miami vibes to Jamaica Adult entertainment club eyes new era with international acts flair
As Taboo marks 15 years in business, the popular adult entertainment venue is setting its sights on elevating the nightlife experience by bringing more international talent and brand partnerships to Jamaica.
Founder and owner Shemara Todd said patrons can expect a stronger Miami influence at the Kingston-based club, including regular appearances from overseas performers and a series of activations through a new partnership with premium cognac brand Courvoisier.
“Taboo is also partnering with Courvoisier, so look out for a lot of activations for the brand at the club. Taboo will be giving our local customers a taste of Miami — no visa needed — bringing in foreign acts at least once monthly.”
The announcement comes as Taboo continues to expand its offerings following a recent upgrade to its Kingston location. The club has added new amenities, including more than 30 VIP sections, a full-service kitchen, additional parking, multiple restroom facilities and lap dance rooms.
For Todd, the move reflects the continued evolution of a business she launched in 2011.
“I was 22 years old when I opened Taboo, which was my special venture that I poured my heart and soul into, so to be standing 15 years later is a blessing”, she said.
Taboo’s story began in the basement of Quad Night Club in New Kingston, then owned by Todd and her husband Corey. Since then, the brand has expanded beyond Jamaica, establishing operations in Miami and drawing inspiration from the city’s vibrant nightlife scene.
Todd said her vision has always been to create an environment where patrons can relax, socialise, and enjoy premium entertainment.
“When I opened Taboo, I was younger than most of my employees, so best believe I had to earn my respect. When I started going out, it was the days of Asylum and Quad, but I was more of an introvert, so I found myself more comfortable going to the strip club where I didn’t need to have friends or somebody to keep my company,” she said.
“The dancers were always friendly, but at the same time the music was old. So I started thinking, how could I make this better? My husband and I got the opportunity to purchase Quad in 2011. We had the space for a strip club, and the rest is now ‘Taboo’.”
Although the club officially opened in September 2011, its anniversary celebrations are traditionally held during the Heroes Weekend period to coincide with Todd’s birthday. Todd credited the venue’s atmosphere and loyal patrons for its longevity.
“Taboo is a happy place, hence the tag line ‘the Ultimate Adult playground’. Once you’re not violating anyone, we promote ‘living your life and enjoying yourself’. Nothing compares to the Taboo experience,” she said.
Reflecting on the milestone, Todd said the club’s longevity and continued growth have given her a deep sense of gratitude and satisfaction.
“I love where I’m standing right now. I love the position Taboo is in so I wouldn’t do anything differently. I give thanks to God for blessing my dream, and I continue to be grateful to everyone who supports Taboo”, she said.
