JC student stabbed near gas station, released from hospital

A Jamaica College student who was stabbed near the Rubis gas station on Constant Road in St Andrew has reportedly been treated and released from hospital.

The incident happened about 4 p.m. on Tuesday, sending renewed concern through the Half-Way Tree area as police continue efforts to keep students safe during the busy after-school period.

Detectives assigned to the St Andrew Central Police Station are still gathering information and working to identify the person responsible.

The stabbing occurred despite a heightened police presence in the Half-Way Tree commercial hub and surrounding areas, which was put in place with the start of the new school year on Monday.

St Andrew Central commanding officer Superintendent Mark Harris said police had been conducting after-school patrols and escorting students home.

“We have been out there in the space right through. This just happened a little further up the road from where the police were at the time,” Harris said.

He acknowledged the difficulty of preventing such incidents despite the police presence.

“But it doesn't matter how good you are, it just takes one man with a knife to just stab somebody,” Harris said.

Harris also noted that some incidents involving students can develop while they are idling at bus stops.

Police are appealing to anyone with information about Tuesday's stabbing to come forward and assist with the investigation.
