School sends students home early as protest erupts after police shooting

St Richards Primary School on Red Hills Road in St Andrew has asked parents to collect their children ahead of the usual dismissal time following a fiery protest near the school this morning.

The protest was reportedly sparked by the shooting death of a man known only by his alias “Mad Dog” along Karl Samuda Avenue earlier today.

Angry residents reportedly lit a fire along sections of Red Hills Road, prompting a heightened police presence in the area.

Although the protest occurred in the vicinity of the school, administrators said the situation had not negatively affected activities on the compound, with normal school operations continuing.

However, in a notice to parents, the school urged those who could safely do so to collect their children early.

“While we encourage parents to remain calm, we encourage you to collect your children if you are able to do so safely. Please bear in mind the conditions in the surrounding area and exercise caution when travelling to and from the school,” the communication said.

The school also said teachers would record the time each student leaves the compound and assured parents that the situation was being monitored closely.

“Our priority remains the safety and well-being of our students and staff, and we will continue to act in their best interest,” the school said.

A strong police presence was reported in the area as authorities responded to the protest.

Meanwhile, the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of “Mad Dog” have not yet been ascertained.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing the incident.

As of September 13, some 215 people had been killed by security forces in alleged confrontations, according to the figures provided.
