Tivoli Gardens FC put brakes on Tru-Juice Racing United clobber Molynes United 6-0 in JPL
Tivoli Gardens handed newcomers Tru-Juice their first taste of defeat in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) on Sunday, beating the St Catherine team 2-0 at Bramwell Clarke Sport Complex, to knock them off the top of the league.
Nigerian Daniel Omuzo opened the scoring for Tivoli with a 17th-minute header, and Steve Clarke fired home a loose ball in first-half stoppage time to secure the win.
As a result, Tru-Juice slipped to fourth on seven points, while Tivoli Gardens, who remain unbeaten, climbed to third on eight points.
First place
Meanwhile, Montego Bay moved into first place on 10 points after a 1-0 win over Dunbeholden at Jarrett Park.
Jourdain Fletcher grabbed the game’s only goal three minutes into the contest, scoring for the second time in as many games.
Dunbeholden, at the foot of the table, are yet to score a point this season
In the first game of the Sabina Park double-header, Racing United thrashed Molynes United 6-0, led by a brace from Nickyle Ellis (32nd, 60th).
After losing to MoBay United last week, Racing United’s head coach Densil Theobald was pleased to see his team rebound in such emphatic style.
“Winning in style”
“Football is about winning matches and not just winning, but winning in style. That is why I can only commend the players,” he said.
“We set a goal this week to rebound from our loss, and we did it in fascinating style. We are about improving each game. Our next game is against Tivoli, and we will rest and prepare for them,” he said.
Racing took the lead after only two minutes through Damion Herrera, who fired home a Markovic Brown pass.
Ellis extended their lead just past the half-hour with a free kick from the edge of the box.
Molynes showed very little going forward, and Ellis made it 3-0 on the hour, when he slotted past Samuels from inside the area.
Ronaldo Biggs would make it 4-0 after riding a defender’s challenge and slipping the ball past Samuels.
Javaughn Cole then finished off a good team build-up in the 72nd minute, and Kadean Young fired home a pass from Biggs to seal the scoreline in the 85th minute.
Racing moved into second with nine points, while Molynes, who were losing their third straight match, are 11th on three points.
Meanwhile, in the late game at Sabina Park, Mount Pleasant Football Academy and Cavalier played to a 1-1 draw.
