Top Gyal Pinkz looks to inspire women

Up-and-coming artiste Top Gyal Pinkz has experienced domestic violence and has decided that her musical catalogue will be the source of inspiration to women who have been through similar experiences.

"Women are powerful and it just takes courage, and we must believe in ourselves that even without men, we can accomplish anything. That's the message I want women to get, especially those from our inner-city communities where I am aware that sometimes women tend to have a low self-esteem and depend solely on men," Top Gyal Pinkz explained.

A few months ago, she recorded the song Breaking Rules, a counteraction to the single Breaking News by Dexta Daps.

" Breaking Rules has reached more than half a million viewers on Pinkwall because of the message that it conveys. Most females agree that we should speak up in terms of domestic abuse in relationships, and place more focus on building our individual life as women," she shared.

According to Top Gyal Pinkz, Breaking Rules is among a number of songs that she recorded that preaches self-independence and liberation of women.

"Well, I have a couple more to come. But Breaking Rules is indisputably based on the feedback from women who have left abusive relationships, and placing more focus on improving themselves in order to be successful in life," she said.

The artiste, whose given name is Delissa Murdock, is from the Allman Town community in Kingston.

"The name Top Gyal Pinkz was really given to me by my close friends. I mean, I've always loved the colour pink and my friends always called me 'Top Gyal' in everything I did. So we merged both together. Trust me, it was a long debate on this name," she said.

Top Gyal Pinkz says she brings versatility and a strong drive and passion "to not only add to our dancehall music culture, but to also empower women and empower youths that nothing is impossible. Write about it, add a rhythm, and tell your story."
