Masicka super fan eyes dancehall stardom

Moesha ‘1 Davii’ Ryman is already a familiar face online for her passionate renditions of Masicka’s songs, but the Edith Dalton James High School alumna is hoping to turn that attention into a career of her own and become one of dancehall’s top female artistes.

The 29-year-old Greenwich Town, Kingston 13 native has been winning over social media users with videos of herself singing over Masicka’s music, a passion that she says started long before the Internet began cheering her on.

“When I was going to school, music was always something that made me happy and helped me express myself. I would think about the different sounds, lyrics, and how music could bring people together. I used to be one a dem students weh knock table and freestyle,” she told THE STAR.

Ryman, who does hair and is a social media influencer and content creator, said her journey into music was sparked by her love for Masicka’s catalogue.

“Mi just take it to our next level when mi a sing Masicka songs. The people love the passion, so right now people on the Internet a cheer fi mi. Them a push me and a tell me say mi can do this music thing for myself, so mi try and now mi a do it,” she said.

Her breakthrough moment came during the online clash between Masicka and Leroy, when she decided to record herself singing over one of Masicka’s songs.

“One day mi just a vibe and a do mi thing and mi a wonder if mi post the video. Mi post it when mi sing ‘Masicka if me seh me a the goat how we fi vex.’ Mi see it go viral,” she recalled.

That reaction encouraged her to continue.

“Everybody a say them love how mi sing over Masicka songs and mi just take it from there and start doing more. Every song weh him sing from them time deh, from the clash come right up, mi sing it over fi the people them.”

Her growing popularity has even caught Masicka’s attention, and he has reposted her content.

“Yes, him repost me and mi have to big him up fi that,” she said. Ryman also revealed that supporters from Masicka’s 1syde camp have been checking in on her and her development.

She said Masicka’s music remains particularly special to her because she can connect with the emotions and lyrics without having to force the performance.

“If mi a go through something, mi can express it through music. Listening to Masicka’s music, whether mi sad or happy, Masicka have a song weh mi can relate to or it push me,” she said. While several producers and artistes have approached her about singing over their music, Ryman said she has declined for now.

“I don’t really want to put a lot of pressure on myself because I would have to study other artistes’ songs,” she said. “The other artistes’ songs dem good to sing but not for me to sing over it. There is a different level of passion when it comes on to Masicka’s music, so it don’t have to force to remember the lyrics.”

Her love for Masicka’s music could soon take another turn, as the artiste has announced plans to remix Honor Roll, a song Ryman has also featured in one of her viral videos, but the time and date has not been set.

Behind the social media personality is a young woman determined to build something for herself despite coming from a difficult background.

“Mi just trying my thing to be the breadwinner. [There has been] no family help from no one from me born till now,” she said. “Mi see myself a go far. Mi ago become of the greatest in a dancehall. Mi nuh doubt myself in a nothing at all. I see myself as one of the greatest female artistes a come up in the dancehall business.”
